West Cork Craft and Design Guild - A guide to some of Ireland's finest craftwork.

David Seeger

David Seeger moved from England to West Cork in 1990. He makes one-off ceramics - bowls, jars, sculptures, wall-pieces. He also creates paintings and drawings, with subject matter ranging from land- and seascapes, to faces and figures, to abstract optical images.

The wide range of colours and qualities achieved in his ceramic pieces are remarkable considering that all the ingredients - clay, pigments and glaze materials - are only simple materials dug from the earth. Melted together in the kiln, they attain the luminosity of gemstones.

The piece illustrated above is "Black Hole" series, No. 21, 14 cm high. It is made in white stoneware clay, with coloured slips, glazes and lustres.
